Amanwella – Tangalle

Tucked into a mature coconut grove overlooking a crescent-shaped beach, Amanwella lies on Sri Lanka’s picturesque south coast near the fishing village of Tangalle.

A contemporary beachside hotel, Amanwella comprises of 30 suites each with its own private plunge pool and terrace. All suites are identical in layout and design and fall into two categories; pool or ocean pool depending on their location. The suites are contemporary and oriental in design, with muted, sandy tones to reflect the beach setting, but at the same time blend local materials and styles, such as the distinctive terracotta roof tiles and hand-built stonewalls. Designed for seamless indoor/outdoor living, the suites open on both sides to let in cooling sea breezes. Floor-to-ceiling glass and latticed panels reveal a private walled-in courtyard and pool on the entrance side, and on the other side they open onto a spacious terrace with a double sun lounger, an alfresco dining area for two and expansive views of the bay.

The hotel’s design is inspired by Sri Lanka’s most notable modern architect, Geoffrey Bawa; the arrival pavilion is a colonnaded, open-air structure, overlooking a grass courtyard and a reflection pool surrounding the free-standing library. The Restaurant and the Lounge Bar are elegant spaces on either side of the library and are open on all sides, offering spectacular views of the bay below. The Restaurant is open all day and serves delicious Asian and Mediterranean cuisines with a strong emphasis on freshly caught seafood. The relaxed Lounge Bar provides a range of drinks and snacks, as well as a selection of cigars, and is an ideal spot for sundowners. From the terrace outside these two dining venues, steps lead down to the unique 47-metre infinity swimming pool, which also boasts magnificent views of the coconut grove, the beach and the sea beyond. The Pool Terrace backs the swimming pool and is ideal for alfresco dining during the day. There is also the Beach Club on the western end of the beach, an open pavilion with a wooden deck for lounging and informal dining of Asian and Mediterranean cuisine.

Amanwella provides a very quiet location for complete relaxation.
